Bedrijfseconomie, financieringsleer en Nobelprijzen

De jaren vijftig tot zeventig van de vorige eeuw waren gouden jaren voor de financieringsleer. Van vuistregels werd het een vakgebied in het hart van de economische wetenschap: financial economics. In deze bijdrage richt ik mij op de Nobelprijswinnaars Merton Miller en Franco Modigliani als kopstukken in deze revolutie. Met hun M&M-indifferentie-resultaten over de financiële structuur van ondernemingen staan ze in het geheugen gegrift van alle post-1958 economiestudenten. Ook een achttal andere Nobelprijswinnaars op het gebied van financial economics passeert de revue. Bovendien wordt een brug geslagen naar het aanverwante vakgebied van information economics dat in reactie op M&M belangrijke toepassingen vond binnen de financieringsleer. De schokkende indifferentie van financieringsbeslissingen in de neo-klassieke M&M-wereld werd zo een eyeopener en inspiratiebron voor vervolgonderzoek.
